SkyCity Losing Support

The recent report we published talking about SkyCity Entertainments handout from the government has caused a raucous in the land based pokie world with Skycity rivals wading into the argument.

The initial report we posted talked about how the SkyCity casino is looking to put $350 million into a conference centre but to do so wants something in return from the government. This comes in the form of being allowed more pokies and to renew its licence for longer.

Already the argument has seen a political backlash from Green Party MP Denise Roche who said: “It’s outrageous the Government is prepared to increase the legal number of pokies and gambling tables just so a corporate winner will build a place for people to have a conference,”

The Problem Gambling Foundation CE Graeme Ramsey said:

“This is not a free convention centre,”

SkyCity Entertainment Handout Bad

Some people are questioning why the government changed its stance on casino legislation simply to accommodate one large casino company. Quake Causing Increased Pokie Usage

The gross amount of $926 million spent actually equates to around $212 per person in the country, which shows big money being spent on the lottery.

The key drivers for this shift in spending on the lottery have been because of the large jackpots on offer and also because of the sluggish economy. It seems many people are looking for the big win to fix their financial problems.

The CEO and chair of the Lottery Commission had this to say on the annual report:

“This result was particularly gratifying as it was achieved against the background of a retail environment that continues to be very challenging,”

“Our business is in good shape – our brands are strong, our sales are high, and our retailers and staff are committed.

“From this base, we now look to the future with a specific strategic objective – to encourage more people to play.”
