SkyCity Losing Support

The recent report we published talking about SkyCity Entertainments handout from the government has caused a raucous in the land based pokie world with Skycity rivals wading into the argument.

The initial report we posted talked about how the SkyCity casino is looking to put $350 million into a conference centre but to do so wants something in return from the government. This comes in the form of being allowed more pokies and to renew its licence for longer.

Already the argument has seen a political backlash from Green Party MP Denise Roche who said: “It’s outrageous the Government is prepared to increase the legal number of pokies and gambling tables just so a corporate winner will build a place for people to have a conference,”

Now we have seen more politicians join the furore along with the Problem Gambling Foundation and Lion Foundation.

The Problem Gambling Foundation CE Graeme Ramsey said:

“This is not a free convention centre,”

“This is going to be paid for by the gamblers of Auckland and in particular problem gamblers. Because of that, we’re all going to pay because we all pick up the social cost of gambling.”

The spokesman for the Lion Foundation, Phil Holden said:

“It effectively means that over time as the charitable gaming sector continues to decline, those people who want to play those machines will ultimately end up in the casino.”

It seems that many feel SkyCity are getting too much out of the bargain by being allowed to house more pokies at its online casino. This being said, SkyCity and the Economic Development Minister don’t feel this is the case.

If you are unsure about visiting land based casinos why not visit an online alternative such as Grand Reef Casino.

SkyCity Entertainment Handout Bad

Some people are questioning why the government changed its stance on casino legislation simply to accommodate one large casino company. The SkyCity Entertainment business gained a change in legislation to allow them to increase the casinos number of pokies and card tables. This legislation change was to support the casino ploughing $350 million into building a new conference centre.

The people questioning the right of the government and SkyCity are those that feel a large casino corporation earning loads in profits should not be getting handouts from the government for building a conference centre they will profit further from.

“It’s outrageous the Government is prepared to increase the legal number of pokies and gambling tables just so a corporate winner will build a place for people to have a conference,” Green Party MP Denise Roche said.

This being said it seems Skit City Entertainment want more about of the deal as they are requesting their Auckland casino licence to have renewal earlier than one would expect to take the licence past 2021. So on top of more gambling machines the casino is also looking to extend the period of their licence too.

For the second quarter of 2010 Skycity made $78.8 million in profit which is a huge seventeen percent increase on the same period of 2010.

If you don’t fancy nipping to a local casino such as one of the SkyCity casinos then why not take the initiative and play at an online casino instead. Of all the online casinos you could choose the best one right now is All Slots Casino, this is an online casino that offers loads of brilliant promotions and delivers over four hundred online casino games from the comfort of your own home. Land Pokies Decrease as Kiwis Go Online

On land gambling has been a huge problem in New Zealand, but over the past twelve months the amount of pokies available has decreased by quite a bit even if money that is being spent on the pokies has increased. Some of the anti gambling tribe are really happy with this precedent but truth be told, this is only happening as Kiwi’s are turning to online casinos for their pokie thrills.

It is an interest twist to see that the amount spent has increased a few percent but the number of pokies is falling quite dramatically. So lets talk about why.

Firstly the Earthquake in February 2011 saw many pokie vendors cease business as they were damaged by the natural disaster. Secondly many governments are withholding licences for pokies and thirdly many businesses are giving up on the past time because of problems with red tape. On top of this there are other factors such as the government reduction in max bets.

The government reduced the maximum bet on land based pokies to $2.50 recently which hasn’t really caused a difference to the pokie decrease as it was already in full swing by this point.

So why are people turning to online pokies?

Well with the reduced number of pokies being available ever shrinking many people are having to travel further a field to find pokies in their locality, this causes problems with modes of transport so they are using the internet as an alternative.

We also note that many people see the dwindling number of pokies as an issue because they are loosing variety of pokies to choose thus going online where there are literally hundreds of pokies at your finger tips.

If you are interested in moving to online pokies then why not try Grand Reef Casino.

Quake Causing Increased Pokie Usage

Christchurch and surrounding districts have seen a huge increase in pokie playing over 2011 when compared to 2010 and some are saying this could be down to the stress and strain caused by the huge Earthquake that rocked Christchurch in February 2011. The Earthquake was of such a magnitude that some 182 people unfortunately lost their lives.

Nationally spending on Pokies was up only three percent in 2011 from 2010, but for Christchurch the figures show a truly different story with an increase of 9.4% being seen in the area. The amount spent in 2010 on pokies in Christchurch was $76,841,209 yet 2011 saw a huge $84,085,916 spent on pokies in the area.

Andree Froude of the Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand said of this latest information:

“We certainly hope that it’s a transient situation due to the difficult year the people of Christchurch have had, rather than a trend.”

What further backs this information is the fact that 33 vendors closed their doors to pokies in 2011 in the Christchurch area. Some of these were direct results of the Earthquake itself. This was a 2.3 per cent reduction in vendors from 1443 to 1410. On top of this, or because of this, the total number of pokies reduced in the region from 18,681 to 18,133, a reduction of 3%.

Overall the spending on pokies increased by $7,244,707, even though the number of pokies and pokie vendors reduced during the same period.

It has also been noted that Kiwis are also starting to play pokies online more than in ground based bars, clubs and casinos.

If you love your pokies then why not try playing online rather than at a pub, club or casino. If you want to try online pokies why not try Lucky Nugget Casino!

Kiwis Turn to Online Pokies

The land based pokie world had a great 2011 but recent figures suggest that this was the peak in the upward curve and many pokie vendors will start to see a decline in profits. The recent for this change in fortunes is the increasing number of online casinos that accept and enjoy New Zealanders as members whilst also offering a massive array of online pokies.

While it is known that there has been an increase in money spent on pokies overall in New Zealand in 2011, a total of 3% to be exact, it is also known that some regions saw a decline. Northland province is one such area of New Zealand that saw a reduction of some $8 million spent on pokies in 2011, this represents a reduction of over 20% spending in the area.

We do know that places such as Christchurch helped the increase with a 9.4% increase in the region.  This has been partly put down to the difficult year the area had with the Earthquake, as mentioned in a recent article here at Online Pokies NZ.

Interestingly whilst land base pokie vendors are starting to see reductions in spending, it doesn’t mean us Kiwi’s are becoming tight with our money, no it actually means we are simply spending at the online pokies. Thats right, many people are starting to find and enjoy the online pokies and spending their money at the online casinos instead of at their local.

There are many reasons for choosing to play online but the biggest reasons are the fact that online casinos carry many hundreds of different games to choose from, you get more value for money and more importantly is the fact that you get to play these pokies from the comfort of your own home.

If playing pokies online interests you then why not play at Ruby Fortune Casino.

Gambling with Pokie Addiction

There has been an increasing amount of reporting on the risk of becoming addicted to pokies. In fact this reporting goes hand in hand with the issues seen with the economy in recent times which many say is fuelling the current addiction issues.

There has been reports that some 13,000 people sought help with addiction to gambling in the year of 2010, but interesting the numbers seem to be heavier in some areas that others. In the Taranaki region some $60,000 a day is put into the 572 pokies found there, thats an average of $104 per pokie per day. Interesting of the 13,000 people seeking help for addiction only 177 came from the Taranaki region.

While gambling is a growing problem many people say that pokies are a large cause of this because of their ease to play and addictive games on offer. The answer could be that these are simply the most readily available of the gambling sources and ones where you don’t have to talk to a person.

The New Zealand Community Trust has waded into the issue of late and you can read what the CE had to say. The chief executive of the New Zealand Community Trust said of the issues of pokie addiction:

“What we do know is problem gambling is a very complex disease that even highly experienced medical practitioners don’t understand.

“Unfortunately there are some people, thankfully only two per cent, that are problem gamblers.

“It’s the behaviour that is the problem, not the environment that gambling is conducted in. Gambling is conducted in a very regulated environment.”

The businesses behind the casinos and pokies in New Zealand give $20 million in funding a year currently to support those with gambling issues. It has been reported that addicts account for 2% of the gambling population.

New Zealand Big Lotto Gamble

In 2011 it has been reported that us Kiwi’s went a little overboard on the Lotto by spending obscene amounts of money on tickets throughout the year.

The Lotteries Commission has just unleashed its end of year annual report and it makes for interesting reading. In 2011, with the country under a cloud of economic issues, us Kiwi’s spent a total of $926 million on tickets for the Lotto and Instant Kiwi plus other Lotto games.

The gross amount of $926 million spent actually equates to around $212 per person in the country, which shows big money being spent on the lottery.

The key drivers for this shift in spending on the lottery have been because of the large jackpots on offer and also because of the sluggish economy. It seems many people are looking for the big win to fix their financial problems.

The CEO and chair of the Lottery Commission had this to say on the annual report:

“This result was particularly gratifying as it was achieved against the background of a retail environment that continues to be very challenging,”

“Our business is in good shape – our brands are strong, our sales are high, and our retailers and staff are committed.

“From this base, we now look to the future with a specific strategic objective – to encourage more people to play.”

Those against gambling because of its addictive nature are actually saying the figures are appalling as it shows that those who are already struggling financially are now spending more on gambling as a means to pull them out of the financial crisis.

The argument is that many families are doing this at a detriment to their own finances at home because the lure of the big win is overpowering and causing them to buy tickets on the premise that they think they will win millions and won have the financial issues they have now.
